Born
in Perthshire the youngest son of a Highland gamekeeper and Lovat Scout
piper (who was a veteran of the Gallipoli campaign), lain Anderson was
brought up on a diet of Highland bagpipe, gaelic song and Irish tenor
—musical elements which have remained consistent in his nightly radio
show. He taught Drama at Jordanhill College in Glasgow for 20 years,
while broadcasting for Radio Clyde. In 1985 he moved to BBC Scotland
where he developed his huge interest in Celtic music.
If his programmes have been called
eclectic, it’s because he has always thought a musical selection on
radio should represent the listener’s record collection at home. Twice a
winner at the prestigious Sony Radio Awards in London, lain somehow
manages to find time to commentate on rugby and shinty for BBC Scotland
and to relax on the beaches and hills close by his grandmother’s home in
remote Sutherland.
lain reveals that in his adult
life he has only ever voted for one political party
—"Nice to be constant", he says.
