 A SHEPHERD'S SONG
As sung by Willie Scott

I’m a shepherd and I rise ere the sun is in the skies
I can lamb the yowes wi’ ony o’ them a’
Oh I like ma flock tae feed an’ look fresh an’ fair indeed
But I wish the cauld East winds would never blaw

I can smear me sheep an’ dip I can underlock an’ clip
I can lamb the yowes wi’ ony o’ them a’
I can parrock I can twin oh or cheat them wi’ a skin
But I wish the cauld East winds would never blaw

When the winter time is here for their lives I sometimes fear
Tae some sheltered nook ma flocks I’ll greatly ca’
Or in the mornin’ grey I’ll turn them tae the brae
Or seek them in the towerin’ wreaths o’ snaw

In the lambing time I wot it was little sleep I got
But when the summer’s sunny breezes gently blaw
On yon bonny sunny hill I’ll lie an’ sleep ma fill
When the lambs are runnin’ roon about me braw

I can cut an’ mark an’ spean or drive them tae the train
Though their dams be runnin’ bleatin’ in a raw
I can stand the market through and right well sell them too
And my master’s money safely bring it a’

I can work in times o’ need I can sow or hoe or weed
I can swing the scythe wi’ ony o’ them a’
I can cut the corn an’ bin’ an’ right braw stooks leave behin’
That will stand the autumn winds when houses fa’

And when I’ve done ma wark, let the night be ere sae dark
At a swaggerin’ pace I’ll hie masel awa
Tae the lassie dearest yin she’s the best beneath the sun
She’ll name the day we’ll be nae langer twa

Now ma neebor beware when ye gan tae show or fair
The fiery liquor never taste ava
If you’re drouthy thole awe till your ain braw hills ye see
And the bonny bubblin’ streams will quell it a’

I can smear me sheep an’ dip I can udderlock an’ clip
I can lamb the yowes wi’ ony o’ them a’
I can parrock I can twin oh or cheat them wi’ a skin
But I wish the cauld East winds would never blaw

Flagnote:  Willie Scott was born in Canobie, Dumfriesshire, in 1897 and spent most of his working life as a shepherd. He came from a family of seven, most of whom were singers, storytellers and musicians. During the 1960s Scottish Folk Revival Willie Scott was in great demand and appeared at many folk clubs and festivals including a concert tour in America. He died in 1990.
