 THE HASH O’ BENAGOAK
Traditional as sung by Charlie Murray

Oh it’s sax month come martinmas I fee’d in Turra toon
They said I wis the brawest chiel in a’ the country roon

Wi’ a ring dum day ring dum a day
Wi’ a ring dum a diddle cum a dandy O

Noo it’s auld Geordie fee’d me Robbie never spoke
Tae come an’ ca’ the second pair at the Hash o’ Benagoak

Noo oor foreman’s like a constable he never fa’s asleep
An’ up an’ doon the lang rigs he never slacks a theat

The second billie that’s masel I ca’ a pair o’ broons
Raisin’ ragnails on the foreman’s heels I fairly keep ma roons

Noo oor third he comes fae Foggy Loan an’ he’s a pointed chiel
His horse an’ his harness are aye lookin’ weel

An’ syne we have an orra lad he seldom ca’s a ploo
There’s aye plenty orra work an’ sae mony neeps tae pu’

An’ Sharny is the baillie a gey little chiel
But roon aboot the kittlie neuks he gars the barra’ reel

And it’s then we have a kitchie deem her name is Bessie Broon
It wad fairly tak a saddle girth her middle tae gae roon

Noo Robbie has a brother that’s wrang amon’ the feet
Tae see him knipin’ roon the close wad nearly gar ye greet

An’ syne he has a sister she’s perjink an’ neat
But faith she keeps the kitchie billies unco scant o’ meat

Noo Robbie comes in the mornin’ he gies the door a bash
Looks oot aneath his pickie-say “I think we’ll hae a thrash”

Then it’s a’ ye jolly horsemen ye’ll ging tae the ploo
The orra lad’ll ca’ the neeps an’ Sharny fill an’ pu’

Noo the author o’ ma cantie lay if you want him tae be known
Ye’ll find him in a herrin’ boat at the pier o’ Foggy Loan

Wi’ a ring dum day ring dum a day
Wi’ a ring dum a diddle cum a dandy O

Flagnote:  An amusing song that reflects the number of men needed in the pre-tractor days on Scottish farms. Don’t look on a map for the pier o Foggy Loan – that is the byname for Aberchirder, Aberdeenshire, near to Turra (Turiiff).Charles Murray was one of the fine singers from the North-East who did much to encourage the Scottish Folk Revival – a tradition which has been carried on by singers such as the great Jock Duncan from New Deer (now exiled in Pitlochry!). Jock’s version of this song is absolutely first-class.
