The
Scots Independent Annual Oliver Award Lunch was held in Terraces
Hotel, Stirling on Saturday 21st May. The 2005 winner, and 23rd
recipient of the Award was the much-respected former editor of the
Scots Independent, Kenneth Fee. With the assistance of his wife
Margery, he edited the paper for nineteen years. The lunch was the
largest gathering for any Oliver presentation. Over one hundred
nationalists gathered to congratulate Kenneth.
James
Halliday, former SNP Chairman and current Chairman of the SI
board, presented the Award. He was fulsome in his praise for Kenneth who
has given so much to the SI and the cause of Independence. Una
Ozga (Oliver Brown’s daughter) began the event with a warm welcoming
speech. Bruce Crawford, MSP and SNP Business Manager, proposed the toast
to the SI. He praised its contribution to nationalism over its
seventy-nine year history. Kenneth Fee thanked those who had nominated
him for the Award in his usual witty, erudite but tongue-in-cheek
manner. He spoke of the many trials and tribulations of being a teacher,
editor, Scottish nationalist, community councillor, and family man, all
of which define his life and give it meaning.
Lillian
Macdonald, who chaired the gathering, gave a vote of thanks. Winnie
Ewing - Madame Ecosse and President of the SNP - ended the day with a
short impromptu speech thanking Kenneth for his work over the years. |
