Gordon Menzies and Robin Watson of Gaberlunzie
Gordon Menzies and Robin Watson of Gaberlunzie
being presented with the Oliver Brown Award by Ken Fee,
Editor of the Scots Independent Newspaper, 1999.

Gaberlunzie, Scotland's Premier Folk Due, Gordon Menzies and Robin Watson were jointly presented with the Oliver Brown Award on 29 May 1999. Their response in word and song delighted a large gathering in the Terraces Hotel, Stirling.

Robin Watson and Gordon Menzies have been together as the duo Gaberlunzie since the early 1970's and are widely recognised for producing an exciting blend of modern and traditional Scottish songs. Not only do Robin and Gordon give full expression to traditional material but have penned many excellent songs which enrich the continuing stream of Scottish folk music and song.

Gaberlunzie have combined an emphasis on rhythm and harmony with a warmth of style which has a wide appeal to audiences both at home and furth of Scotland. Wherever they travel Gaberlunzie take not only Scottish music and song but that other extra special ingredient, Scottish humour.

The Gabs, as they are popularly called among their loyal and growing following of supporters, have a vast wealth of professional experience gained from their performances before a wide variety of audiences. Venues of all shapes and sizes have enjoyed the pulsating magic of a Gaberlunzie performance - village halls, clubs of all descriptions, festivals, holiday resorts, football stadia, concert halls, corporate functions, and the Gabs have even had the pleasure of singing in Brussels for members of the European Parliament.

At home and abroad, Gaberlunzie ensure that audiences hear the best of Scottish music and song. Over their long career they have appeared in the USA, Canada, Denmark, Belgium, The Netherlands, Eire and the Middle East. They also enjoy enormous popularity with visitors from all over the world. The Gabs prove the capacity of Scottish music and song to transcend national frontiers. They prove that nationalism is the basis of Internationalism.

Gordon and Robin are no strangers to the wee screen and the radio, not only at home but also in Canada and the United States. They have recorded 16 albums, five of which are available on CD and one on video. Their latest release 'Rolling Home' is selling well. In addition they have completed solo projects reflecting their own individual creativity (Robin - "Summer Storms' and 'Colours' : Gordon - 'Full Circle').

Spanning the breadth of Scottish culture Gaberlunzie's performance appeals to all age groups. As singers, instrumentalists and songwriters, their talents are impressive and their gift for entertainment unsurpassed.

The Gabs were a worthy addition to the ranks of the Oliver Award winners.
